Yes, there is a possible JAST deal.
No, the project is not stalled, nor has the possible JAST deal "stolen the patch away from you".
The patch wouldn't have been ready at this point either way. As you can see from the newly updated status up top, I'm revising the scripts because my first translation was bad.
I've been working as hard on revising the scripts as I did translating them.
And I say "revising" because "editing" is something I believe someone other than the translator should do.
I decided to do this revision because of two things.
1. I was inspired by GundamAce's humility in translating Never7. He decided to do a second pass of translation since he didn't feel his first translation was up to par. Speaking of GundamAce, he has contacted me that he would like help on future projects. We have come to the agreement to collaborate once we are both finished with our respective projects.
Anyway, with his inspiration, I decided to actually read my translation and see if I was pleased with it. Which brings us to the second point.
2. I just didn't like how my translation read in a lot of places. I thought that this would be rectified in editing. It wasn't.
3. I overestimated the power of editing. When I received the edited Chapter 2, I realized that my scripts weren't ready to be edited yet. I still left some translation errors, and the awkward wording wasn't addressed. So I really did need to revise the scripts before they were ready to be edited.
More than half of the lines in the revision are being reworded.

I did not "betray" any project members because I've done every non-technical aspect myself, so far. [The technical aspects were done by Nagato]
Actually, I'm the one who feels betrayed. Antheon was the first one who got an e-mail from JAST, back in September, but he made the decision to "not respond", all by himself. He didn't even attempt to contact me, or anyone else, until this weekend, when he suddenly appeared.
Even though he was so eager to contact me by e-mail when he recruited me for "his" project.
And even when he contacted us, he disregarded what we had to say, and went ahead and posted on his site.
Which, by the way, I was never invited to use.
And I'm sorry, but I'm not going to bother responding to comments or questions. I'd rather work more on the actual project. Feel free to redirect your questions to Antheon, who is more than willing to talk to the fans.

Good to hear some news, thanks for the hard work! ^^
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you're back. Finaly, some good news.
ReplyDeleteWell Shit..... That is actually awesome.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, if you don't have enough editors, I have a good handle of the English language and a about a 4th grade of Japanese but more important than that I have time and I'm interested enough to help out. Contact me anyway you want if you want to test me
Don't let others get you down, Blick. Honestly, I was really worried something happened to you, given how much you updated in the past. I'm just glad you're doing alright. English patch or not, you've brought me a lot of joy from your translations. I find it quite admirable that you are passionate about your translations, even going so far as revising it to make it higher quality. So thanks again for everything.
ReplyDeleteI really like the revision shown thus far too. So, rather than signing anonymous, I'll sign with my (very common) name.
We are still grateful for all your work pal. Im sure that many people around the entire world
ReplyDeleteshare those feelings.
Wow. Uh.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry if I insulted you in the past. It really sucks when you're used like that. I won't be going to the, uh, other project page again.
Fuck yeah, I was just about to bite the bullet and play the unedi- sorry, unrevised patch. Can't wait!
ReplyDeletedrama queen
ReplyDeleteGood to see you're still alive, Blick. all I've ever asked for is a legitimate update and this is it. Thank you for all of your hard work and I anxiously look forward to the finished product. Which I assume won't be ready for at least another 6 months, with the whole story going through a rewrite stage.
ReplyDeleteI may be in the minority, but I really hope you're able to work out a deal with JAST and Steam. Having a quality vn such as Steins Gate on Steam could very well bring thousands of new players to the genre, changing its reputation and finally giving a chance to quality all ages and eroges to leave behind the old nukige stigma that so far has brought down visual novels in the mind of most gamers.
ReplyDeletePlease, at least consider it.
I think having it with Jast and on Steam would be amazing. It would be great for the community and would make it so you get paid for the hard work which you have done.
ReplyDeletefuck jast
ReplyDeletefuck steam.
if you give it to jast, we will never see it.
Please don't give it to JAST. They take years to released perfectly complete finished products, or if the product is unfinished, delay it years longer than it would have taken.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone else remember Sumaga? Demonbane?
^
ReplyDeleteWhere's Sumaga and Chaos;Head? Oh wait.
Good god if you have a brain cell in your head you won't give it to JAST.
Also DRAMAAAAAAAAAAA
JAST said that Sumaga will be released before the next Anime Expo, alongside Saya no Uta and Hanachirasu.
Delete>He didn't even attempt to contact me, or anyone else, until this weekend, when he suddenly appeared.
ReplyDeleteHe probably "didn't even attempt" to contact you because it was assumed that you were in agreement that this was a free patch, and you didn't want to make money from it. He probably thought that much was UNDERSTOOD but no you have to be a little drama queen and have a "possible" jast deal.
Thinking about jast getting their hands on this makes me sick; it'll never see the light of day. Please reconsider your decisions and think hard before you do anything.
Nice to see how people like to accuse others when they don't have a clue about anything.
ReplyDeleteChaos Head was never licensed to begin with: the ft team stopped doing Noah because they felt the additional paths were lame, and dropped the link to the old patch just in case.
Sumaga (and Django) have been licensed, but their translators\editors have still to finish their job. Even without JAST, you still wouldn't be able to play those games.
Saya no Uta, Hanachirasu and Kikokugai have been licensed, but their fantranslated patches are available everywhere (like Chaos Head's) and no one will force anyone to support the official releases.
Demonbane had a lot of problems because Nitroplus remade the entire engine during the localization process, and at one time doubted to release the game in English due to poor preorders. It was also the first Nitroplus\JAST game.
So, what exactly are you talking about, aside from rehashed flames whose only merit is having been repeated countless times by countless cluelesse anons?
Of course having a free patch will take less time than an official localization, but having Steins Gate on Steam would be a boon for the visual novel genre in the west. Then again, there are those who want it to die in obscurity so that they can discuss it on /jp and feel like elites.
I still have to wonder, though: why the hell would JAST license a game with a fan translation out for years? And more importantly, are they using said translation? Because if they're making their own, then... I'll have no words for them.
DeleteNo one is going to buy Steins;Gate even if it does go on Steam. Also, Sumaga would have been released already; one reason it was held back for so long is that all motivation to work on it was destroyed.
ReplyDeletewell, more than one hundred and fifty thousands people bought recettear on steam, and that game hadn't even a shred of steins;gate's popularity... so no, i think you're wrong and i agree with those who said before that having it on steam would probably do wonders to spread the love for visual novels outside of the usual niche (the one that won't pay for those games despite proclaming to be the only one worth to play them)
ReplyDeleteSteam would be great news, even if it means waiting for a while, so I really hope you guys don't continue ignoring them.
ReplyDeleteSteam does wonders for many games. Recettear has sold 170k so far and Chantelise has sold 50k so far. Those were both Japanese doujin games that had no name recognition when they were released on Steam.
Steins;Gate has name recognition. Steam has 40 million users. If you really think Steins;Gate wouldn't sell then you are delusional.
Recettear had actual gameplay.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.siliconera.com/2012/01/16/steinsgate-will-make-the-shift-to-playstation-3-this-year/
ReplyDeleteWhat about releasing it on consoles as well as on Steam? You'd get more people buying it that way.
So wait, Japanese gamers are going to pay 80 & 70 dollars for two games readily available on a number of other formats, for considerably less?! bwahahaha
DeleteThey will probably have features not available on any of the other format.s
DeleteWow, reading the other blog surely gave a different impression... I'm happy to see you still going strong, and I'm ready to support an official release on Steam anytime, I think that platform would be great to push visual novels in the USA. Thanks for all your work!
ReplyDeleteJast USA is fine, it's Nitroplus that made Demonbane's western release a mess. Payne talked about those issues in a Siliconera interview released today: http://www.siliconera.com/2012/01/16/jast-usas-peter-payne-on-the-daily-dealings-of-his-company/
ReplyDeleteThat said, I advise Blick and the other guys to tread carefully: if they see that Jast and Nitroplus\5pb are really going to find an agreement regarding Steins on steam then do it, but if this means waiting years for a complete patch without any kind of official release, then keeping this project as a free fantranslation might be the best thing to do.
Please continue trying your hardest :)
ReplyDeletei'm fine with steam, and i would probably buy an official relese (i would prefere a dvd edition, though, like other jast games). also, the more you polish your script, the better the final result will be
ReplyDeleteYou need to go solo Blick. You and your ruggedly handsome roommate can take on the world without Antheon's interference. But seriously, I want to see this come out. I'd buy a copy or six.
ReplyDeleteyeah, i don't think anyone gives a damn about antheon trying to keep his street credibility when the actual work has been done by other people, we all want to see steins appreciated by the largest possible audience, and steam\gamersgate\origin etc would be far better options than a fantranslation patch known only to a small number of people
ReplyDeletei hope you and nagato are able to find an agreement with 5pb, you are doing a great job
Wauv, all this drama is happening... Can't you guys make up?
ReplyDeleteI would buy the shit out of S;G if it was on Steam. :|
ReplyDeleteI support steam, but fuck jast
ReplyDeletei will support anyone able to bring stens;gate to steam, be it jast or another company
ReplyDeletePersonally i'm fine with the official (i.e. commercial) version, but not with the steam/download version... ._. Want my Steins;Gate in pretty box and all...
ReplyDeleteYEAH NOW FUCK OFF BLICK YOU DONE YOUR JOB
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you're not letting the possible deal with JAST prevent you from working on the project for its original purpose. Keep up the good work! We're all supporting you.
